Tips for designing a flawless embroidered patch

Embroidery is an art form. Follow these simple tips to get the best results.

design guidelines

Think in bold shapes

For a clean, sharp finish, use solid shapes, bold lines, and short text. Avoid very fine details, tiny lettering, or photographic effects like gradients – they don’t translate well to thread.

stitch guidelines

Check your line thickness

The thickness of your lines determines the stitch type:

  • Satin stitch (the classic, smooth look): Use lines between 1.3 mm (0.05″) and 12.5 mm (0.5″) thick
  • Tatami stitch (a textured, filled-in look): Use for shapes thicker than 12.5 mm (0.5″)
  • Run stitch (a simple, single-line stitch): Use for fine details with lines thinner than 1.3 mm (0.05″)

Frequently asked questions

Thanks to our UK facility, it’s fast! Fulfilment for patches typically takes 2-5 business days. After that, shipping within the UK usually takes just 1-2 business days.

Our patches come with a heat-sensitive adhesive backing, making them easy to apply with a standard household iron (these are called iron-on patches). For a more permanent bond, or for application on fabrics that can’t be ironed, you can also sew them on.

Yes, iron-on patches are durable when applied properly to fabrics like cotton or denim, lasting many washes. For best results, wash the garment inside out on a cool setting and avoid tumble drying.

You’ll pay the base price of the patch and a one-off digitisation fee. The exact cost is listed in our product catalogue, with all prices available in GBP (£) and including VAT.

Selling custom patches? Don’t forget to add your profit margin.

Digitisation converts a standard image file (like a JPG or PNG) into a special embroidery file (like a DST). The digitised file tells our machines exactly where to place each stitch. It’s a one-off setup process for each new design.

It depends on the item. For everyday items like denim jackets, backpacks, or cotton t-shirts, ironing on is fast, easy, and creates a strong bond. For items that’ll be washed very frequently (like workwear) or made from delicate/synthetic materials (like nylon or leather), sewing is more secure and long-lasting.
